Training Modes Explained

Overview of Training in WordByWord.io

WordByWord.io provides seven training modes, each designed to strengthen a different aspect of vocabulary retention. By combining these modes in your study routine, you engage both recognition and active recall, which leads to faster and more durable learning.

To start a training session, navigate to the Trainings section in the sidebar. You will see all available modes displayed as cards — select the one that best fits your current study goals.

Word → Translation

In this mode, you see a word in your target language and must choose the correct translation from four options.

How it works

  1. A word is displayed along with four possible translations.
  2. Select the option you believe is correct.
  3. If your answer is correct, you advance to the next word. If not, the correct answer is highlighted and you must tap it before continuing.

This mode is ideal for initial exposure to new words and for building basic recognition. It is the most approachable mode for beginners.

Word ← Translation

The reverse of the previous mode — you see a translation and must choose the correct word in your target language from four options.

How it works

  1. A translation is displayed along with four possible words.
  2. Select the correct word.
  3. The same correction flow applies: wrong answers require you to select the correct one before moving on.

This mode strengthens the connection from meaning to foreign word, which is essential for active vocabulary use.

60s Sprint

A fast-paced, timed challenge that tests your reflexes and quick recognition. You have 60 seconds to answer as many questions as possible.

How it works

  1. A word is shown together with a suggested translation.
  2. Quickly decide whether the pairing is correct or incorrect.
  3. The next pair appears immediately. Keep going until the timer runs out.

Sprint mode is great for warming up, reviewing large sets of vocabulary, and building speed. All results are submitted together at the end of the session.

Typing

Typing mode provides the deepest level of practice. Instead of choosing from options, you must type the answer from memory. The app uses smart comparison that allows for minor typos (90% similarity threshold).

How it works

  1. The meaning of a term is displayed.
  2. Type the word in your target language into the input field.
  3. Submit your answer. The app checks it against the correct word and shows whether you were right.

Use this mode once you feel comfortable recognizing words and want to move toward producing them accurately. It is especially valuable for languages where spelling is challenging.

Sentence builder

This mode tests your understanding of word order and phrase structure. It is available for terms that contain three or more words.

How it works

  1. A phrase from your collection is broken into individual words and shuffled randomly.
  2. Tap or click the words in the correct order to rebuild the original phrase.
  3. The app checks whether your arrangement matches the original.

Sentence Builder helps you internalize natural word order and is particularly useful for learning common expressions and collocations.

Letter builder

Similar to Sentence builder, but at the character level. You reconstruct a word letter by letter.

How it works

  1. A word's letters are shuffled and displayed as clickable tiles.
  2. Click the letters in the correct order to spell out the word.
  3. The app verifies your spelling against the original.

This mode is excellent for mastering spelling in languages with unfamiliar scripts or tricky orthography.

Listening

This mode focuses on listening comprehension. The system plays the pronunciation of a word, and you must identify its meaning.

How it works

  1. An audio clip of a word is played automatically.
  2. Four possible translations are displayed.
  3. Select the one that matches what you heard.

Listening mode trains your ear to recognize spoken vocabulary, which is crucial for real-world conversations and listening skills.

Term Statuses and Spaced Repetition

Every term in your collections has a status that reflects your current mastery level. As you train, WordByWord.io updates these statuses automatically:

  • New — The term has not been practiced yet.
  • Recognized — You have started training and can sometimes identify the term.
  • Familiar — You recognize the term with reasonable consistency.
  • Learned — You have demonstrated solid recall of the term.
  • Know — The term is fully mastered.

The system uses spaced repetition (SM-2 algorithm) to schedule reviews. Terms at lower levels appear more frequently in training, while well-known terms are reviewed at longer intervals. Each answer you give updates the review schedule, ensuring you spend time where it matters most. You can also manually adjust a term's status at any time using the status picker during training.

Tips for Effective Training

  • Start with Word → Translation when you encounter a new set of terms. Move to Word ← Translation once you feel some familiarity, and use Typing mode for the strongest reinforcement.
  • Train in short, regular sessions. Fifteen minutes each day is more effective than an hour once a week. Frequency matters more than duration.
  • Use 60s Sprint for quick reviews. It is a great way to warm up or review a large collection in a short time.
  • Mix modes within a session. Alternating between recognition and production modes keeps sessions engaging and works different memory pathways.
  • Try Sentence builder and Letter builder for terms you find difficult to spell or remember as complete phrases.
  • Review your progress. Check term statuses periodically to see which terms have advanced and which still need work.

By using all seven training modes together and trusting the spaced repetition system, you will build a strong, lasting vocabulary over time.
